Mission Statement
The mission of the Westbrook Emergency Management is to prepare for, respond to and recover from and mitigate any emergency or disaster that affects the Town of Westbrook.

Emergency Management incorporates ’All Hazards Planning’ when developing emergency plans for the town and its residents. All Hazards refers to all types of disaster events:

• Weather: Tropical Storm, Hurricane, Tornado, Extreme Heat & Cold, Blizzard/Nor’Easter and Flooding
• Transportation Accidents: Large Scale Local and Highway Interstate, Railroad, Aviation, Marine
• Large Scale Destruction/Displacement of residents due to a fire, chemical release, etc.
• Terrorism
• Any other circumstance deemed necessary by the Police/Fire Incident Commander and/or the First Selectman

The Town of Westbrook encompasses 16 square miles in lower Middlesex County, directly on the Connecticut coast, between New Haven and the Rhode Island border. Westbrook is about 110 miles to the east of New York City. Our population is about 7,000 yearly residents. The population can increase to 10,000 in the summer months with seasonal residents and visitors.

Interstate 95 and a high speed railroad system divide the town in half, from east to west. The town is prone to all types of weather emergencies and transportation accidents throughout the year.

Westbrook host one of the largest marinas on the Connecticut shoreline that provides temporary or full time boat slip access and other mariner services to boaters throughout the year.

Emergency Management works closely with the following town departments and agencies throughout the year:
- Fire Department
- Fire Marshal
- Resident State Troopers/Constables
- Public Works
- Health, Building and VNA Departments
- Board of Education / Schools
- YMCA
- CT Department of Emergency Management & Homeland Security (CT DEMHS)
- National Weather Service (NWS)
- Local Amateur Radio Operators

Emergency Management provides emergency notification to the public on disaster information and updates them as needed. This is accomplished via:

- Reverse notifications via telephone, cellular and electronic devices (CT ALERT)
- Local low power AM Radio station
- CT News Media

If needed, Emergency Management is ready to respond with disaster sheltering including pre-storm and post storm services. Our department is equipped to open temporary centers for charging electronic equipment and other various equipment.

Emergency Management meets throughout the year with town and agency leaders to ensure emergency plans and resources are current to meet our goals and responsibilities. In addition we maintain partnerships with Business, Non-Government, State and Federal agencies to ensure our residents are provided with all applicable opportunities after a disaster.
